Born in Lyallpur on 1 July 1945. Educated at State High School, Nabha 1951-60; Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana 1960-66; Indian Agricultural Research Institute, 1967 -71; B.Sc. 1964; M.Sc. 1966; Ph.D. 1971.

Assistant Wheat Breeder 1971-78, Wheat Breeder 1978-85, Zonal Coordinator, ICAR, 1987-2001, Professor, Plant Breeding, 1985-2001, Head, Department of Plant Breeding, 1998-2001, and Director of Research, 2001-05, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

Awards/Honours: ICAR Award for Team Research in Agriculture, 1980; FICCI Award, 1984; Pesticide India Award, 1992; ICAR Plaques for development of wheat varieties PBW 343 and PBW 373, 1996 and 1997 to the Wheat Team, being the leader; Commemoration Certificate by PAU, 1996 for breeding improved wheat varieties; Plaque by Alumni Association of College of Agriculture,1996 for outstanding contributions; ICAR Plaque during India-CIMMYT Day celebrations, 1998; Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award, 1999-2000; Punjab Government Parman Pattar, 2001; PAU Gold Medal for development of wheat variety PBW 343, 2001; Khush Distinguished Professor Award for the term 1999-2002.
