Born in Wagarianwala, Lahore on 1 April 1946. Educated at Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Lopoke, Amritsar, 1961-64; Khalsa College, Amritsar, 1964-69; Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, 1969-72; Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, Moscow, USSR, 1976-80; B.Sc. 1969; M.Sc. 1972; Ph. D. 1980. Attended advance courses at Saskatchewan Institute of Pedology, University of Saskatchewan, Canada, 1990; Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, Moscow, USSR, 1986 and 1978.

Lecturer / Asstt Soil Chemist, 1972-1984, Radiation Soil Chemist, 1984-1992; Sr. Radiation Soil Chemist, 1993-2006, and Emeritus Scientist, 2006-08, Department of Soil Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab.

Awards/Honours: PRII Award for the Best Paper 1990; ISSS Best Poster Presentation Award, 2002. Member, Editorial Board of Australian Journal of Soil Research 2004-10; Archives of Agronomy and Soil Science 2004 to date; Journal of Nuclear Agriculture and Biology 1995-2010; International Committee and Symposia Organization for International Society of Trace Element Biogeochemistry 2013 to date and Founder Member, Executive Council of International Society for Selenium Research (ISSR) 2012 to date.

Fellow: Indian Society for Nuclear Techniques in Agriculture and Biology, 1994; Indian Society of Soil Science, 2005.

Research Areas: Soil chemistry and fertility, environmental pollution, selenium toxicity and phytoremediation
