Born in Kannanallur, Tamil Nadu, India on 18 July 1945. Educated at Board High School, Parappadi & St. John's College, Palayamkottai, 1959-63; Agricultural College & Research Institute, Coimbatore, 1964-69; University of Hawaii-Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, 1972-76; B.Sc. 1967; M.Sc. 1969; Ph.D 1976.

Have had a Life Insurance Agent sales position with New York Life Insurance and Western & Southern Life in Fort Worth, Texas, 2011-18.

British Council Exchange Young Scientist, 1979; NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow, London, Ont, Canada, 1978-80; Visiting Scientist, IRRI, Philippines, 1987-89; Rockefeller Foundation's Biotechnology Career Fellow/Visiting Professor [3 month/yr] at University of Hawaii 1990-92, Kansas State University, 1995-97 and University of Wisconsin/Cornell U, 1997-2000; Professor (Plant Pathology), Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany, University of Madras, 1990-2006; Senior Scientist, Novozymes Biologicals, Salem, VA, United States, 2006-08.
