Born in Gwalior, M.P., India on 18 October 1952. Educated at Jiwaji University, Gwalior, B.Sc. 1970 and M.Sc. 1972; Graduate BARC Training School, 1973; Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, Ph. D. 1984.

Distinguished Professor, UM-DAE-Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, Mumbai; Emeritus Professor, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai; DST J.C. Bose National Fellow, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

Formerly Director, Bio-Science Group, and Head, Molecular Biology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and DAE-Raja Ramanna Fellow, BARC, Mumbai.

Awards/Honours: Prof. J.V. Bhat Eureka Forbes Award, 1990; International Symposium on Cyanobacteria Biotechnology Young Scientist Award, 1996; Prof. Krishna Sahai Bilgrami Memorial Medal Award of INSA 2006; INS Award 2007.
