Born in Kannur (Cannanore), Kerala, India on 28 February 1961. Educated at the St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata, 1969-76; B.Sc. Botany (Hons) Hindu College, Delhi, 1978-81; M.Sc. Botany, Department of Botany, University of Delhi, 1981-83; Ph.D. University of Delhi, 1990.
