Born in Tiruchirapalli, India on 28 January 1938. Educated in E.R. High School, Tiruchirappalli, 1949-52; St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli, 1955-58; University of Cambridge, U.K., 1967-70; B.A. 1958; M.A. 1959; Ph.D. (Cantab) 1970.

Professor of Plant Breeding, Ford Foundation-ICRISAT, A.P. Agricultural University, Hyderabad 1977-78; ICAR National Fellow, 1978-90; Principal Scientist, 1990-94 and Head, 1994-98, Division of Genetics, IARI, New Delhi; Distinguished Fellow and Program Advisor (Biodiversity and Participatory Plant Breeding), M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, 1998-2008.

Awards/Honours: Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Award 1992; Vasvik Award, 1995; Borlaug Award, 1997; IARI Best Teacher Award, 1998.

Fellow: Indian National Science Academy; Indian Academy of Sciences; National Academy of Sciences, India.

Research Areas: Plant breeding, participatory plant breeding and biodiversity, quantitative and population genetics
