Born in Pabi, Peshawar, India on 20 August 1941. Educated at Government High School, Doraha, 1949-59; Arya College Ludhiana, 1959-61; B.Sc., Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, 1965; M.Sc., Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, 1967; Ph.D., PAU, 1970.

Assistant Professor, 1970-75; Soil Scientist, 1975-85; Sr. Soil Scientist, 1985-96; and Head, Department of Soils, PAU, Ludhiana, 1996-2000; Director, Potash Research Institute of India, Gurgaon, 2000-04. Post Doctoral Research Fellow, IRRI, Manila, Philippines, 1973- 74; Fulbright Visiting Professor, University of Delaware, Newark, USA, 1987-88.
