Born in India on 28 August 1941. Educated at Khalsa High School and Sikh National College, Qadian, Punjab, 1950-58; Bihar Agriculture College, Sabour, 1958-61; Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, M.Sc. 1963; Ph.D. 1968; Post Doctoral Research Fellow at IRRI, Philippines 1977-79; Fellowship, Association of Commonwealth Universities, 1991.

Research Assistant, 1963-64; Assistant Soil Chemist, 1968 -71; Extension Specialist (Soil Science), 1971-74; Soil Chemist, 1974-80; Professor of Soils, 1980-89; Professor and Head, Department of Soils, 1989-94; Dean College of Agriculture, 1994-98, Dean Postgraduate Studies, 1998-2000; Director of Research, 2000-01, at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana.

Awards/Honours: President, Indian Society of Soil Science, Ludhiana Chapter, 1974-75; Honoured by Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal for Outstanding Research in Soil Salinity, 1994; Award of Special Lecture at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, 1998 and at Water Research Institute, Ames, Iowa, 2001; Member, Board of Management, PAU, Ludhiana, 2005-08; Honoured by Punjab Kisan Club, 2001; Award of Certificate of Appreciation by PAU, 2012; Award of Honour by Punjab Government, 2014.
