Born in Hoshiarpur, India on 20 December 1950. Educated at Government Middle School and Arya Higher Secondary School, Ludhiana, 1963-67; Government College, Ludhiana, 1967-70; Punjab Agricultural University, (PAU) Ludhiana, 1970-76; B.Sc. 1970; M.Sc. 1972; Ph.D. 1976.

Assistant Soil Chemist, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, 1976-86; Visiting Scientist, Grassland Research Institute, Hurley, UK, 1985; Soil Chemist, 1986-94, Senior Soil Chemist, 1994-2006, ICAR National Professor, 2006-12, and INSA Senior Scientist, 2012-17, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

Awards/Honours: FAI Silver Jubilee Award of Excellence, 1984, 2001; Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Memorial Prize, 1995; 24th Professor J.N. Mukherjee Indian Society of Soil Science Foundation Lecture award, 2006; INSA Professor Krishna Sahai Bilgrami Memorial Medal, 2009; Vice-chair of Commission 3.3 (Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition) of International Union of Soil Sciences, 2010-14; 2nd Dr. Gurcharan Singh Sekhon Memorial Lecture award of the Indian Society of Soil Science, 2011; INSA Professor Bal Dattatraya Tilak Award, 2014; 13th Dr. Radha Raman Agarwal Memorial Lecture award of the Indian Society of Soil Science, 2015; Platinum Jubilee Commemoration Award of the Indian Society of Soil Science, 2019; Associate Editor of NAAS Journal, Agriculture Research; Member Editorial Board of Pedosphere.
