Born on November 6th, 1963, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Educated at Mithibai College of the University of Bombay, 1980-1984, University of Bombay, 1984-1986, and Michigan State University, USA, 1989-1993. Received B.A (Economics) in 1984, M.A. (Economics) in 1986, and PhD (Agricultural Economics) in 1993.

Professor, Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) at Michigan State University (MSU), since 2008 (Professor since 2014); Interim Co-Director of the Food Security Group (FSG), 2022-2024); Director of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy (FSP); Associate Director, Bean/Cowpea (later Dry Grain Pulses) Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) at MSU (2000–2009); Associate Scientist, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico; Visiting and Adjunct Faculty in Agricultural Economics at MSU; Consultant and Advisor, CGIAR Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA), World Bank, Asian Development Bank, FAO, World Intellectual Property Organization, and World Coffee Research. Her collaborations span over 25 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Awards/Honours: Career Mentoring and Graduate Program Champion Award, AFRE Department (2025); Invited Researcher with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) (since 2023); Ralph H. Smuckler Award for Advancing International Studies and Programs at MSU (2021); Meritorious Achievement Award by the Technical and Management Committee of the Legume Innovation Lab for her leadership in international research collaboration (2017); Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) (1994); Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award from MSU’s Department of Agricultural Economics (1993).
