Born in London, UK on 26 September 1931. Educated at Buckhurst Hill High School, Essex 1943-50; University of Bristol, B.Sc. 1953; Ph.D. 1956; D.Sc. 1970.

Director, University of Nottingham, Centre for Crop Nitrogen Fixation, Plant Sciences Division, 1997 to date.

Civil Service Commission - Research Fellow in Microbiology 1956-59; Lecturer then Reader in Plant. Physiology 1959-69; Professor and Head of Dept of Botany, University of Nottingham 1969-97; Dean of Science 1983-86; Prof Emeritus of Botany 1997; Leverhulme Trust Research Fellow, 2000-2002.

Awards/Honours: Lifetime Research Achievement Award, University of Toledo, USA 2004.

Fellow: Royal Society 1983; Member, Academia Europaea 1993; Hungarian Academy of Science, 1995; World Innovation Foundation, 2003
