Born in Jiangsu, China on 28 August 1950. Educated at Nanjing Agricultural University, China. B.Sc., 1973-81 and M.Sc; 1983-87, University of Birmingham UK. Ph.D. 1987.

President, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science, 2001 to date; Vice President, Chinese Agronomy Association; Vice President, Chinese Crop Association to date.

Head Department of Agronomy, 1988-92, Professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding, 1990-2001, Dean, Division of Agriculture, 1993-94, Vice President, 1994-95, and President, 1995-2001, Nanjing Agricultural University, China.

Awards/Honours: Beijing Govt. Excellent returned Overseas Scholars Award, State Council, 1993; Outstanding Young Scientist Award, 1993; Excellent Professional Education Award, 1994; Excellent Training Award, 1996; Scientific and Technologic award, Class one, 1999, 2000, and class two 2004.
