Born in Udipi, Karnataka on 14 February 1948. Educated at Viveka High School, Kota; Karnataka University, 1963-67; Delhi University 1967-69; Madurai Kamaraj University 1969-1973; Texas A&M University, 1984 & 1991-92; University of Nebraska, 1985; CIRAD, Montpellier: 2002. B.Sc. 1967; M.Sc. 1969; Ph.D. 1973.

Research Associate to Senior Scientist, ICRISAT, Patancheru, 1973-2002; Director, Indian Institute of Millet Research, Hyderabad, 2001-11; Executive Director, ABLE-AG, 2012-15.

Awards/Honours: National Merit Scholar, & National Science Talent Scholar throughout University Education; Honour conferred by the Indian seed industry; Doreen Mashler award, and the “Outstanding Partnership Award - 2009” from ICRISAT in recognition of valued contributions towards global sorghum research; Elected as member of global Sorghum & Millet Genome committee; also recognition for several awards for best speaker, best posters in international and national meetings, best annual report of ICAR institutions, best stall during exhibitions, etc.; Student received many awards such as Best Young Scientist Award during 2005 Science Congress for his Ph.D. work; more than a dozen past students in reputed academic and in research positions abroad.

Research Areas: Plant biotechnology, crop improvement for abiotic stress, and transgenics
