Born in Varanasi, India on 24 June 1957. Educated at Central School, Varanasi 1962-73; Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 1973-79; The University of Sydney, Australia 1980-83; B.Sc. 1977; M.Sc. 1979; Ph.D. 1983.

Distinguished Scientist, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Mexico, and Head, Bread Wheat Improvement, Global Wheat Program- 2005 to date; Adjunct Professor, Kansas State University, USA, and Cornell University, USA.

Post-Doctoral Fellow, 1983-85, Associate Scientist, 1985-86, Scientist, 1986-88, Senior Scientist, 1989-98, Coordinator Global Project- Wheat Resistance to Diseases and Pests, 1998-2003, and Principal Scientist, 1998-2005, CIMMYT, Mexico.
