Educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, Natural Science Tripos - B.A. 1973, University of Papua New Guinea, Masters of Agriculture 1976, University of Cambridge, Department of Applied Biology Ph.D. 1979; Post-doctoral fellow in lentil breeding at ICARDA, Aleppo, Syria 1980-81.
