on
Promotion of Agricultural Exports: Prospects and Challenges

The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) organized a one-day brainstorming session titled "Promotion of Agricultural Exports: Prospects and Challenges" on October 10, 2024 in hybrid mode under the Chairmanship of Dr. P.K. Joshi, Vice-President (NAAS). The convener of the session Dr. Anjani Kumar and co-convener Dr. K. Elumalai presented a base paper outlining the background of India’s agricultural trade. The event brought together eminent scholars, policymakers, industry representatives, and development practitioners to deliberate on key aspects of India’s agricultural trade, its evolution, and the associated challenges and opportunities. A number of insightful presentations were delivered by Dr. Devesh Roy, Dr. Sachin Sharma, Dr. Smita Sirohi, Dr. Raka Saxena, Dr. P. Shinoj, Dr. K. Elumalai and Dr. Renjini, which brought together multiple perspectives over a wide range of issues including analytical framework for understanding global agricultural trade, India’s engagement with WTO, horticultural export potential, environmental implications of exporting water-intensive crops and socio-economic impact of export bans. Next, a panel discussion on “Accelerating and sustaining agricultural exports from India” featuring Dr. Shiraj Hussain, Dr. Jayant Das Gupta, Dr. Abhijit Das, Dr. Vijay K. Sardana and Dr. Tushar Pandey as key speakers was conducted. In his concluding remarks, Dr. P.K. Joshi reiterated the importance of addressing sustainability concerns in agricultural exports and encouraged stronger collaboration between research institutions, policymakers, and the private sector. Dr. W.S. Lakra, Secretary (NAAS), expressed gratitude to the participants, speakers, and panelists for their valuable contributions.
