Marine Nutraceuticals for Boosting Bio-Economy in India

The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) organized a Brainstorming Session on “Marine Nutraceuticals for Boosting Bio-Economy in India” on July 28, 2025 at the NAAS Complex, New Delhi, in hybrid mode. The session was chaired by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, President, NAAS, and conducted under the guidance of Dr. W.S. Lakra and Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Secretaries, NAAS. The event was convened by Dr. R. Jeya Shakila, Director, DIVTF, and co-convened by Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR-NBFGR.
The session began with a welcome address by Dr. W.S. Lakra and Dr. Ashok K. Singh, who emphasized India’s potential to emerge as a global hub for marine nutraceuticals through integrated efforts in research, policy, and industry. The conveners delivered key presentations on “Marine Nutraceuticals in India” and “Marine Natural Products”. In his presidential remarks, Dr. Himanshu Pathak highlighted marine nutraceuticals as a sunrise sector and stressed the importance of branding, market development, and collaboration with institutions and international agencies such as WorldFish.
The event featured panel discussions and expert insights from representatives of ICAR-CIFT, CSIR-CSMCRI, NITTE University, ICAR-CIFE, Export Inspection Council, the Ministry of Fisheries, and industry leaders. Discussions covered key topics including seaweed-based products, carotenoids, fishery by-product utilization, marine proteins, and export strategies.
