Educated at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar 1976-79, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana 1979-81, Punjab University, Chandigarh 1981-83, University of Dundee and Scottish Crop Research Institute, Scotland (U.K.), 1993-96 developed the GM potato with better protein quality; B.Sc. 1979; M.Sc. 1981; M.Phil 1983; Ph.D. (Molecular Genetics), 1996.

Awards/Honours: Panjabrao Deshmukh Outstanding Woman Scientist Award 2020 by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Commonwealth Fellowship, 1993-96, Agriculture Leadership Award, 2015 for leading role in Biotechnology Research and Development. Presentations as an expert in 30 international meetings in 17 countries on the invitation of FAO, UNIDO, European Commission, Secretariat of Convention on Biological Diversity and other international organizations. Member on the Roster of Experts of Ministry of Environment and Forests & Climate Change established by COP-MOP to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Expert member of Accreditation Committee of National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration of Laboratories (NABL), Quality Council of India, 2012-16. Expert member as Certified Assessor as per ISO/IEC 17025 to evaluate the technical competence of national public/ private sector laboratories. Expert member of Biotechnology for Food & Agriculture Sectional Committee, FAD 23, Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi.
