Enhancing India’s Agricultural Competitiveness in Changing Global Trade Dynamics

The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences organised a Brainstorming session (BSS) on “Enhancing India’s Agricultural Competitiveness in Changing Global Trade Dynamics” on May 14, 2026, in hybrid mode under the chairmanship of Dr. M.L. Jat and co-chairmanship of Dr. P.K. Joshi. The session was convened by Dr. Pratap S. Birthal along with co-conveners Dr. Shiv Kumar and Dr. K.S. Aditya, and brought together scientists, researchers, industry representatives, academicians, and officials from ICAR institutions and APEDA. The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. A.K. Singh, followed by a presentation by Dr. Birthal and Dr. K.S. Aditya on agricultural competitiveness under evolving global trade dynamics. In his opening remarks, Dr. M.L. Jat appreciated the efforts of the conveners and stressed the importance of addressing agricultural trade challenges through research reorientation and strategic planning. The BSS covered key themes including tariff and trade fragmentation, SPS measures, sustainability standards, trade diplomacy, and value chain modernisation, with valuable inputs from panelists and participants. The deliberations highlighted the need for adopting global value chain approaches, strengthening traceability and testing infrastructure, enhancing institutional preparedness for sustainability standards, integrating farmers with global food safety systems, and promoting export-oriented policies. Dr. P.K. Joshi concluded the session by outlining strategic priorities for improving India’s agricultural competitiveness.
