Biodiversity Day - 22 May, 2022

The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), India celebrated the World Biodiversity Day, today on May 22, 2022, with presentations from some of the internationally renowned experts, under the Chairmanship of Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, President, NAAS, and Director General, ICAR and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Govt. of India. Over 350 delegates joined online and participated actively.

In his opening remarks, Dr Mohapatra highlighted the importance of biodiversity and mentioned that it is essential for life. We should develop global partnership, and prepare an action plan for preserving biodiversity and for raising awareness among school children, policy makers and the public at large.

The eminent speakers covered various aspects including collection and conservation of crop biodiversity, seed banking, utilization of germplasm resources for crop improvement, sharing of the biological resources through a multilateral system under the Plant Treaty, gene bank genomics, pan genomics, and product development using genomics-assisted and superior haplotype-based fast-forward breeding approaches.
